Phenol

  Phenol is the main component of carbolic acid，which  was used to improve the sanitary condition of hospital.

 In 1860，sanitary condition in hospital was extremely awful.Patients died due to hospital diseases,for their wound would always be infected by bacteria,and the death rate approached 70 percent.People of the day generally believe that poisonous gas generated by drains and sewers was responsible the infection of patients.However Joseph Lister,a great surgeon,believed that there was something that can not be seen by human eyes exist.After the publish of Germ theory,Lister became more confident about his hypothesis. He reposed his hope on carbolic acid,which was used as a dressing for wound after surgery.What he did was,he used carbolic acid all the way through the surgery,instead of just after surgery.And subsequent results were satisfying,none of his patients were infected.He also invented a machine that could spray a fine mist of carbolic acid solution into the air,cleaning up germs existing in the air.Coal tar, where he got his carbolic acid from,was the waste product from the gaslight.Carbolic acid can be extracted from boiled coal tar 

  Phenol,the main component of carbolic acid,is a aromatic molecule consisting of a benzene ring,to which is attached an OH group.Phenol is water soluble and very soluble in oil.

  Phenol is a name that can apply to all compounds that have an OH group attached to a benzene ring.Difference attaches give phenols different name and different properties.There are many other man-made phenols（derivatives of phenol） playing a significant role in our society：antiseptics，foods，drugs，and products.

For example, trichlorophenol and hexylresorcinol were used as antiseptic like phenol.Trichlorophenol,is made from phenol by attaching three chloride atoms to benzene ring, and Hexylresorcinol is made by attaching a OH group and a C6H13 group. Phenols can be used in many field.,picric acid(Trinitrophenol) was used as a dye for silk and explosive during world war one.

  There are also many natural phenols.Capsaicin found in peppers and zingerone gound in ginger are both phenols.

  Tetrahydrocannabinol,THC,is the ingredient in marijuana.Marijuana is used as a medicine to treat nausea,pain and loss of appetite.But marijuana can also be used in a illegal way,people can easily get addicted to it and become really hard to get rid of it.

  Glssypol is a natural occurring toxic compound,it has property to suppress sperm,so it is used as a medicine to control birth.

  Vanillin,the most widely used favoring compounds,is also a phenol. Vanillin(main component of vanilla) is used in chocolate,ice cream,syrups and many foods that we eat today.However,vanillin comes from a natural source which can not satisfy the great demand of vanillin,so finding a way to make man-made vanillin was needed.It is unbelievable that synthetic vanillin comes form waste pulp liquor from the sulfite treatment of wood pulp in making of paper,but it is true.Lignin is the main component of pulp liquor.If we compare these two molecules,we will find that they are very similar,we can then make synthetic vanillin by breaking up lignin under a controlled a condition.

  During 19th century,because of the popularity of billiard,many elephants were killed for their tusks,which were needed to make billiard balls.Ivory stated becoming scarce and expensive.what’s more,elephant tusk was the only source of making these products,because only elephant tusk can provide the elasticity that billiard balls need.So people started to make man-made billiard.Man-made billiard consists of celluloid,which was the first thermoplastic material.But celluloid is cellulose-based polymer,the drawback of celluloid and all cellulose-based polymer is that they tend to explode.Thankfully,there was no record about explosion of billiard.But in movie business,film was compsed of a celluloid polymer made from nitrocellulose,which could explode.In 1897 a explosion killed 120 people in movie theater,and the potential safety problems were not solved.

By 1907,Bakelite was invented by Baekeland.,it was a thermoset material,which means bakelite could keep its shape forever.Bakelite was less brittle than ceramic and glass insulators and did not react with sun,water,salt air and was impervious to acid and solvents.These properties made Bakelite a great insulator.The funny thing was,bakelite was found to be the ideal material for billiard balls,though it was not the original idea of Baekeland,and bakelite was then used to produce many products such as telephone,bowls and so on.

  Let us have a look on the molecule of bakelite,formaldehyde in Bakelite can react at three different places on the benzene of of phenol,forming cross-links,which make Bakelite so rigid.

  We can now see how phenol changed our world,not just phenol itself,but all its derivatives(phenol),we can find them everywhere in our world.If phenol disappeared,the derivative of phenol would disappear as well,our world would be totally different.
